A little further around the bay from the city, the sand is lined with a row of tiny, brightly painted huts that have become one of Melbourne’s most photographed sights. This is Brighton Beach, home of the famous bathing boxes — and Ozz Possum could not wait to pose beside them.

Eighty-Two Rainbow Huts
Along Dendy Street Beach stand 82 timber bathing boxes, each painted in its own bold colours and patterns. Built more than a century ago, they have no power or water — but they are treasured pieces of Melbourne heritage, and no two look alike. Ozz Possum skipped along the sand from one to the next, delighting in every stripe, spot and splash of colour, with the city skyline shimmering across the water in the distance.
Bay Views and City Skylines
Brighton Beach offers something special: a calm, family-friendly stretch of sand with one of the best views of the Melbourne skyline from across Port Phillip Bay. On a clear day the towers of the CBD rise beyond the boxes like a painted backdrop — a favourite scene for photographers and, of course, for a colourful little possum.
Getting There
Brighton Beach is an easy trip from the city. The Sandringham train line runs to Brighton Beach Station, a short walk from the foreshore, and there is parking along the Esplanade. The bathing boxes sit on Dendy Street Beach, just south of the station — follow the sand until the colour appears.
Best Time to Visit
Summer is classic beach weather, but the bathing boxes shine year-round. Sunrise and golden hour bathe the huts in warm light, while a clear day gives the crispest view of the skyline across the bay. Bring a hat, a camera and plenty of time to wander the full row.
For Melbourne Businesses and Venues
The bayside suburbs are full of friendly cafés, shops and seaside businesses. Ozz Possum loves shining a light on them. If you run a local spot near Brighton or along the bay, the possum would happily visit for a playful photo or video that celebrates your corner of Melbourne. Say hello through our contact page.
