Just south of the city, where the Yarra bends past the Domain, lies one of Melbourne’s most beloved places to breathe. The Royal Botanic Gardens is a green heart in the middle of the city — and for a small creature named Ozz Possum, it feels a lot like home.

Thirty-Eight Hectares of Calm
Spread across nearly forty hectares beside the river, the gardens hold thousands of plant species from Australia and around the world. Ozz Possum padded along shady paths, past the mirror-still Ornamental Lake, the sweeping lawns and the curious mound of Guilfoyle’s Volcano. Willow trees trailed into the water, ducks drifted by, and the noise of the city faded to a gentle hush. It is the kind of place where you can slow right down and simply notice things.
Where Possums Really Live
Here is a happy secret: real possums live in these gardens. At dusk, ringtail and brushtail possums come out among the branches, just as our little mascot’s namesakes do all across Melbourne. Ozz Possum felt a special kinship wandering here — a reminder that the city’s wildlife is never far away, even in its busiest corners. Learning to share these spaces gently is something close to this Melbourne-born character’s heart.
Getting There
The Royal Botanic Gardens sit beside the Domain, an easy walk from Federation Square across Princes Bridge, or a short tram ride down St Kilda Road. The famous “Tan” running track loops around the gardens’ edge, and several gates welcome you into the green. Entry is free and the gardens are open every day.
Best Time to Visit
Spring fills the gardens with blossom and birdsong, while summer evenings are perfect for a picnic on the lawns or an outdoor film under the stars. Autumn brings golden leaves, and even winter has its quiet charm. Early morning and late afternoon offer the softest light — and the best chance of spotting the gardens’ resident wildlife.
For Melbourne Businesses and Venues
From garden kiosks to nearby cultural venues, there are lovely local spots all around the Domain. Ozz Possum loves teaming up with them. If you run a café, tour or attraction near the gardens, the possum would happily visit for a cheerful photo or video. Reach out through our contact page.
